5Great Alternative to the XBR series
By drewflow
I received this TV a week ago and I am in love. This TV has the Bravia Engine 3, not 2 like the spec sheet on this page says, so for the money, you are getting a top notch product. SD signals look like crap, because they are crap, its not your TV's fault, its your cable provider, but HD looks amazing. I have not been having any problems with the black levels, as described in other Sony reviews, and the colors are rich and vibrant. Plenty of inputs on this set. I currently have my macbook (watching HULU and other video streams, picture looks great) via DVI to HDMI, a PS3 (which is giving me the true 1080p experience for Blue Ray Discs, which is what I base my color and black observations on) and a HD cable box also taking up another HDMI port. I still have not even used 1/4 of the inputs provided. The cinema mode when watching movies adds a warmth to the picture that gives you a movie theatre experience without the "true white" LCD overexposure. If you are looking for a GREAT tv at a semi-affordable price forget about Samsung and Panasonic, Sony is where its at for all around value, oh and you don't get that glossy screen which drives me nuts! Sound could be a little fuller, but by no means is it bad. Besides, if you are going to spend the money on a nice set, you might as well get a nice stereo system as well.PROS- GREAT PICTURE, GOOD VALUE, GREAT COLORS, GOOD MODE SELECTIONS (PICTURE), LOTS OF ADJUSTABLE ITEMS, PLENTY OF INPUTSCONS- AUDIO SOMEWHAT LOW, 240HZ ADVANTAGES REALLY HAVE YET TO BE SEENS AS THIS ONLY AFFECTS INPUTS THAT THE TV CAN CHANGE OR UPRES (IE CABLE).ALL IN ALL I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TV TO ANYONE SHOPPING FOR A NEW FLATSCREEN.

5A great TV
By Victor
Terrific picture, especially on the HDTV channels. Controls, etc., are straightforward and intuitive. Sound is just a tad softer than I'd prefer, but it's not bad. Could easily hook a secondary sound system to it, but haven't bothered. My previous TV, an Olevia 32", was the same width, but with side-by speakers it lost a full 8" of screen size. The Bravia is exactly the same width, only a couple of inches taller, and delivers a 25% larger screen. The 240hz upgrade is definitely noticeable. If you're on HD, it's the only way to fly. Plan to hook it to my laptop and take advantage of online TV-movie selections. This set also connects to the Internet, if you have the correct cables or signal devices. That's on the agenda, too.Don't fear the delivery service, my experience was excellent: They arrived when promised, brought it upstairs, unpacked it, hooked it up, and carted away all the trash. Buying via Amazon beats going to a big-box store and having to do all that yourself -- and the price I paid was more than $200 *below* my local big-box store for the same TV. Free delivery, too. Couldn't be happier.

53D Peering into Look - Terrific PQ Details and Blacks
By Allen H. West
Received our 40" Z5100 one week ago via Onecall Amazon Sale - double boxed via Fedex tracking/timeliness. Extremely happy with the results. I own four LCD TV's and a long term member of AVSForum. Was able to replace a 32" Sharp with side speakers and gain 8" viewing for my wife's primary viewing in the Master Bedroom Armoire and while I was torn between it and the B750 it's a damn good thing I went with the Sony as I found the Samsung would not have fit the space. To my surprise when I set everything up was how reflective the Sony was while off - not full matte like my Sharps but that has no impact when the TV is turned on at all. Damn the TV is black and semi-reflective Off but a beauty when displaying. No gaming is done on this TV and so I won't report on anything in that regards and I won't assist with calibrations since my viewing preference is a vivid panel.I decided on this panel after studying panels for the past 6 months and finally viewing the XBR9 and the Z5100 next to Samsung B750/B650 panels. As great as the Samsungs were I was unable to get that peering into PQ DEPTH that I experienced on the new Sony panels - plus I feared the wife may complain about reflections on the Samsungs after having none for 4.5 yrs on the Sharp. I was repeatedly impressed with this immersiveness on these two new Sony panels as I am in my Home.I popped in Mamma Mia Blu-Ray and it was fantastic - the Mediterranean Sea color and clarity was eye popping and I turned on AMP and when you haven't experienced it before it's sort of strange to have that Live Camera view and soap opera look - I prefer the theater look but it's nice to play with but something one can use according to their preference. The blacks on this are wonderful trumping the 4.5 yr old it replaced easily.I spent hours going from the bedroom to my main 57" 3.5 year old Sharp and I used Food Network HD to cross compare since they constantly zoom into the cooking experience and it's easy to see PQ details on that channel. Again my in-store HD Viewing with 3D depth peering into of the Sony trumped my 3.5 yr Technology on my Sharp easily. The friggin clarity on HD on these cook-off's was simply amazing on the Sony and it tells me Sony may have a kick butt 65" when it debuts with BE3 on the W5100 in August. My Sharp had a flatter smoother look - still looked great and the 57" size delivers alot of WoW but the details on the Z5100 was stunning. The Z5100 and XBR9 are the first LCD's I've seen that could match or exceed the PQ details of the SXRD I owned previous with HD.Also, I carefully watched for flashlighting and clouds and saw ZERO - simply BLACK - BLACK - BLACK!The only negative I can report is Turdvision SD - it is what it is - a TURD!I'm used to viewing HD 90+% of the time and so I'll always tolerate it for my channels that have not transitioned yet but I don't buy my TV's for SD - after all some SD channels can look quite good while others are crapola no matter the panel especially after growing accustomed to HD at six times the PQ.The irony is that I'll rarely view this TV regularly as my wife and I have very different tastes and I have a sleep disorder where I only view the Sony occasionally after setting it up but it gave me a yardstick to make a move to a 65" > in the future with it's PQ Depth, Details, and Black Levels and hopefully I can provide her this larger 40" panel in the same space a 32" would only fit with First Rate PQ for 8+ years and she's quite happy and takes away the guilt when I jump to a 65" as she'll have the Z5100 for regular viewing and then the BIG HT 65" or my 57" for HT immersion as size does have it's benefits to get HT immersion with Blu-Rays especially.IMO Ten/Ten Panel Processing, BE3, 240Hz, and the 100K:1 CR and the maturity of Sony Bravia Series is now returning rewards in the "Z5100" and XBR9. Enjoy!:DALSO --- Most importantly with the achilles Heal of LCD --- I see no Friggin HAZE!!! The Samsungs (B750/B650) are still outstanding IMO also but if you cannot handle the reflective nature and ambient lighting issues a viewing room may interfere with PQ these Sony panels trump the Samsungs IMO and with a little patience the prices should drop also.Extremely Happy and look forward to the Sony 65" W5100 in August!!! :)

5Sony reliability now at a Samsung price.
By Samuel Chell
I have the V-Series Sony 40" LCD set immediately preceding this model. Based on my experience with the earlier model, I've recommended the KDL 40V4100 to friends and family. The differences: 1. When the 40V4000 first came out, it was being sold for as much as twice the price of this one; 2. the previous model had 10- bit color processing (which now is available only on the more expensive Z or later series). Although 120Hz is now the rage (available beginning with the W series), Sony's unique 24 fps Movie True mode is likely to make a more noticeable difference in "smoothening out" camera movement than 120Hz capability (which is primarily a come-on for the gamers and "Matrix" generation). For under $1500, this is the set I would unhesitatingly select ahead of a comparable Samsung (you can get the price down to around $1000 if you go with the S series, but you'll sacrifice Sony's acclaimed Bravia 2 processor as well as Sony's auto-link feature permitting operation of all components with a single switch). If I were willing to spend close to $2000 or more, I would look at a 46"-52" Sony with 120 Hz (just to be current) and 10-bit color processing for a hi-def picture that simply leaves nothing to be desired. I would also do everything possible to purchase from Amazon. (I had to make two exchanges before ending up with the "right" model, and Amazon as usual made both hassle-free transactions.) Also, be sure to check out Amazon Warehouse for a "refurb" or "scratch and dent" model. I've never been disappointed in any of these items at reduced prices, or even noticed any difference from mint.A couple of things learned through experience: 1. A flat-panel set does not "play" as large as the old tube models. If you formerly required a 27" convection tube screen, you'll need 32"-40" to enjoy a similar viewing experience with an LCD flat screen. 2. When watching HDTV telecasts (still only a small percentage of channels), it's quite likely you'll notice little to no difference from standard definition if the screen is less than 40". So if you're planning on purchase of a 36" or smaller screen, skip the extras. 720p is more than adequate, and most of the other frills can be regarded as needless extra expense. Also, SD (standard definition) will look better on any small screen than on the most expensive manufacturer's large screen models, so make price--not brand name--the primary criterion when selecting a screen under 40".

4Great TV, Superb Picture (except the static dot sparkles see text), Good Value
By EP in TX
Have had my 40V4100 a month now. Had originally wanted the "W" with 120 Hz but this "V" was on sale locally making the difference $600. I do not regret buying this 60 Hz set, and saving hundreds of dollars. Overall it is excellent after getting the picture settings adjusted to my liking. Audio quality from the built-in speakers is surprisingly good with the Dynamic mode ON and some extra bass and treble. I do have a minor problem that seems to be common to this new line of Sony LCD TVs - intermittent tiny bright white dots that appear randomly across the picture in a straight line, just a few at a time, about 4" below the top of the picture, in HDMI mode only. Most noticeable on dark or black scenes. I almost exchanged the set for another one, until I saw the same white dots on a 40V4100 at the store playing a Blu-Ray disc. So far Sony's support does not seem to recognize the problem. I hope Sony will pay attention to what their customers are telling them and come up with a fix for this ASAP because it can be quite noticeable on HDMI upcsaled DVD or Blu-Ray sources. If not for that I would rate it a 5.EDIT and UPDATE! Sept 14, 2008 - I am happy to report that Sony has come through and addressed the white dot sparkle problem with an easy to use software/firmware update via a USB flash drive they sent. I now have ZERO white dot sparkles, and a perfect picture. Excellent! And at today's prices a couple of hundred dollars less than in May when I bought mine, it is an even better deal!

5Very nice HDTV for its price
By N. Gupta
There are many LCD HDTVs in market today and picture quality is quite comparable. When you take a TV home, it always "look" great but what you should also consider is its feature-set, user friendliness. This Sony tv is very nice in all aspects for the price tag it has. The discounted one, I mean and not the MSRP. The remote is much more responsive, lots of control options, very nice cinemotion even without the 120Hz. Dont judge TVs too much by response time and contrast ratios. These numbers are product specific and can not be compared across. I also like this tv can lock channel irrespective of the ratings info. The on-screen guide is very nice.Has very rich and true colors, deep black levels, good surround sound. When you switch channels, they change very quickly as compared to some other TVs. The information displayed is also very good.Overall, a very good buy.Cons: No backlit remote, no swivel stand, USB port is not generic.

4Initial Review
By Joseph A. Dawson
Ordered this on 11/26 on a lightning deal for $300. It was delivered yesterday 11/28. I love prime shipping!I set the TV up connected to the internet as well as a DirecTV HD receiver. Picture quality is good. At times whites looked a little strong, but I think I can take care of that with some custom color settings. The remote has a Netflix button and a Vudu button on it. Tested Netflix and had no issues. Tested the Pandora Vudu app and it worked fine as well. Remote was not very responsive, but will not need to use it very often.I had read that iSymphony TV's are just rebadged Samsungs. I used a Samsung remote code to pair it with the DirecTV remote, so I guess that is true. Overall for $300 I think it is a great value - only time will tell.

3Not a terrible TV
By mkeiser
So I got this TV during the lightning sale like everyone else who has reviewed it. It has been about a week now so I feel comfortable enough give my review. While I do agree that it being shipped literally in it's original box and nothing else is kind of stupid. But other than that let's get into the review. The TV is quiet nice and considering my last TV before this was a seven year old 'HD' Box TV I can't complain. There was no damage and everything worked well. Set up was really easy and though the screws were difficult at first it all went well at the end. All the ports work though I wish there was more than one composite, one component, two HDMI, and a PC port. But again these are small complaints when I could just by a switch box.The wireless USB connector worked great with my linksys router. The netflix works great though the interface isn't as good as the console versions. Speaking of consoles I have quiet a few of them hooked in. They look good, not great mind you like some of the higher end TVs but nothing that will make you regret the purchase. Blu-rays are also quiet nice on it.The only real complaint is that the speakers aren't that great. So if you want better sound you should probably get a cheap sound system to correct that. At the 300 dollars I bought it for it's a good TV. Not the best but perfect for what I wanted. You shouldn't pay the full asking price but if it's on sale it's not the worse TV on Amazon.

4Solid Bang for Buck 40 inch Internet TV
By George P. Burdell
Before I even get into the pros and cons of this TV, I'd like to note that I didn't get this set on the Lightning sale for $300. I got it when the price dropped down to $369 for 12 hours a couple days after (I still thought it was a great deal). Thus, please keep in mind my review is based on buying this 40 inch TV at a price-point of 450 dollars or less.Pros:- Screen Size: 40 inch screen for the price...enough said- Internet TV: Vudu and Netflix apps (VERY FEW TVs under $500 come with any Internet capabilities. This is arguably the primary reason I purchased this TV.)- Remote: Sturdy buttons- Ease of setup: Contrary to some other reviewers, setup was straight forward and took about 30 minutes.- Number of HDMI ports: 3- Picture quality: Some may say that the display colors are a bit "warmer" than other sets, but I really enjoyed the picture quality after tweaking a few picture settings.Cons:- Display Type: TFT instead of LED (an LED display would have helped bring out some stronger contrasts)- Refresh Rate: 60Hz is fine at the price point, but 120Hz would have been even better- Sound: Sound is a bit tinny and isn't as loud as I'd have liked. It's definitely not terrible, but I would say it's average at best. If this is a big issue for you, consider an external home theater or speaker system to plug into the TV- Shipping Method: Thankfully, my set didn't arrive damaged/defective, but I can imagine the box getting damaged during shipping since Amazon just sticks a shipping label on the TV box (there's no additional padding/boxing).Overall, I would recommend this TV for anyone that gets it for $450 or less, as it really is a bargain for an Internet TV. It's not a high-end TV by any means, but it's definitely a value nonetheless without the big brand premium price. I wouldn't recommend using this set as a PRIMARY TV, but if it's for a bedroom, lounge, etc, then it's a great buy.Tip: During setup, my channel scroll buttons didn't work until I auto-scanned for channels. Just something to note before you start freaking out that the remote isn't working.

5LN46A850 review, long
By jan
First off let me provide some basic info so you have an understanding of the use, location, and expectations for this TV. Let me state that this is the first HDTV we have ever owned. This is a replacement for a functioning 25" Zenith color console with a rotary dial (only has a flat UHF and VHF input) that we purchased new 25 plus years ago. We have basic cable (Time Warner) that was hooked up to the old TV through a VHS and DVD (separate) player. We started researching HDTV's last year. After information overload from all of the various manufactures as to why they were better we settled on the Samsung brand just to start narrowing it down. After that we took up the Plasma vs. LCD. We settled on the LCD and then quickly narrowed it down to the 46" model based upon our living room layout. We have three interior and one exterior wall, with the exterior wall facing east and is all glass. We have a fireplace at the end of the room and that is where the TV has always set. After all of that was done we were ready to pull the trigger and purchase the LN46A650 but waited for a while ($$). By the time we were ready to purchase, Samsung had just released the 850, 860, and 950. Jump back into research to see what the differences were. Well thin is what we needed to help with the room arrangement so we quickly changed to the 850 (ToC red) / 860 (ToC blue) model. We purchased the 850 on Cyber Monday. It arrived the following Monday.1. CEVA Logistics, Just after placing my order I received a confirmation from Amazon with the tracking #. Goggled CEVA, placed the tracking # in the main web page to locate the TV and there it was, at the warehouse outside of Harrisburg Pa. I checked it several times that week and followed it through their system. I received a phone call from the local agent on Friday who setup a delivery time on Monday (7 days after the order) for a delivery between 9 and 1. They arrived at about 10:00 with a small urban type delivery truck. The two deliverymen were college aged and friendly. They met me at the door and we inspected the package together. They advised me before stepping into the house that they were only to unpack and check that it powered on. They did just that and there were no issues. I tried to tip them but they politely refused and went on their way. I am mentioning this here as some reviews were all over the place on them.2. The TV, It was easy to hook up. Screwed in the cable to the back and turned it on. It went through a couple of quick menus and then it was searching for channels. It even tells you on the screen where it is in the process. We only get about 60 basic cable channels so I was quite surprised when it said that it was up to about 150 and still going. Once it reached the end it stated "removing scrambled channels" which brought the number back down. It found all of the HD channels that Time Warner provides free and I never new they were there.3. Navigating the built in menu system is fairly easy. Once you get the hang of the remote you can set up the entire TV in about 30 minutes (in my case).4. I will say that the remotes are pretty particular that they are pointed at the lower left side of the screen. One remote has everything on it. The second remote in the box that is pretty basic. It will turn the TV off and on; change the channels and the volume.5. ToC, this is a non issue in this model. You can barely see it at all and there is no glare that we can detect at all through the sides that affect the picture.6. The black bezel is extremely glossy and looks spectacular. When our room has all of the lights on you can see the reflections off of it but it has not interfered with our viewing. We mostly have one light on in the room at the far end in the evening and it is not noticeable. Daytime viewing, in the morning the room is brightly lit as it gets the rising sun. The screen is not affected from it.7. Factory defaults, from the start we left them alone till we had a better feel for the TV. We have been tweaking here and there and believe that everyone can customize to their tastes. The picture is just exceptionally clear and the TV does a great job of adjusting the straight 4:3 broadcast into what ever format you want. I think that there are 5 different settings here (4:3, 16:9, zoom 1, zoom 2, wide fit) and you can set to your tastes.8. DVD Player, Hooked it up to the TV with component cables as the connection. The player is a 2001 model and is pretty basic. We placed a Star Wars DVD in because of the THX calibration (Google it) and was utterly amazed that it looked that good. We did not do a calibration and left all of the settings alone. The TV has a built in surround sound emulator that can be turned on and off if you do not have external speakers. The sound was absolutely great compared to what we had before. I am sure that it does not match a true 5:1 or 7:1 but in no way is it weak as other reviewers have claimed.9. Update on DLNA (12-20-2008),(additional info posted under comments, 1-19-2009) You do not need to install the software if you have Vista Home Premium, Vista Ultimate, or Windows Home Server. The DLNA hooked up while I was trying to figure out the instructions in the manual. That is about the only good I can say about this at this point. The instructions in the user manual are almost worthless. It makes it seem that you have to install the software which is not the case if you have any of the 3 OS above. The DLNA found my extensive home photo library and that part works OK. The USB on the side of the TV will not support anything but FAT 16/32 formatted keys. It will not allow the running of an external hard drive on the port. Home Movies and an extensive music library will not play on the TV. DLNA supports a very limited set of formats and codec's. Nothing that I have will run in either of these two categories without an error message "format not supported". How many folks will want to convert hundreds of gigs of home movies and music? After doing a little research I am finding that there is software that will sit between your storage devices and the TV that will convert on the fly. It will be till January sometime that I have a chance to try that out. Final Thoughts on DLNA, I am disappointed that Samsung did not choose formats that more closely resembled what the general population has sitting on their home computers. The use of converters and the shortcomings here are a major let down as compared to the rest of the TV. I will say that my photo library looks stunning on the TV. Samsung has a way to go to support home movies and music. While this is a major shortfall it does not take away the viewing quality that this TV produces when watched. Just be aware that you need to be somewhat Techy to get DLNA working.10. Infolink, The INFOhttp://amzn.com/dp/B001DW6Q8E/?tag={komponelektr-20} found everything the first time. News, Sports, Weather, and Stocks etc can be programmed fairly easy.Final comments, the channel search found double channels on all of the major broadcast affiliates (NBC, ABC, FOX, ETC). It is easy to go through the menu system and tell which is analog and which is digital. Delete the analog as you can see a major difference in the quality. One can hit an "info" button on the remote and it will give you all of the technical stuff on the channels. I really like the feature that tells you which format the broadcasts are in, 4:3 or 16:9, and the resolution 420i, 720P, 1080i. The HD channels and shows themselves are clearly awesome as you see features on the shows that you have never seen before, blemishes on the actor's faces, individual strands of hair, subtle makeup differences in shades ETC. The swivel stand is nice and the TV itself is not that heavy. It comes with a micro fiber cleaning cloth. Only time will tell if this model will give us the longevity that we are accustomed to. We are totally pleased with our purchase.ThanksGM

5Tremendous
By M. Bechtel
My wife and I bought this bad boy last week from Amazon, and it arrived in 4 days flat with their great delivery service. We decided to hang it up on our masonry fireplace. We chose a Sanus tilting mount for the job, which was surprisingly easy to attach to the masonry. The 850 is special because it's super thin. 1.9" at it's thickest point. This makes wall mounting especially attractive. Throw in the excellent picture, and I'm on cloud nine. After one day of enjoying it, I say that while I'm impressed with the clarity of the 120Hz feature, my wife and I keep the setting set to "low", which introduces a higher framerate, but not so high as to be actively distracting. For us, the "camcorder-like" feeling of the full 120Hz is best for sports, as opposed to movies/tv.Bottom line: The Samsung LCD's are amazing to begin with, and the "8" series, given it's thin frame, adds some extra style. Keep that in mind when your comparing this model to all the others, including the 9 (950/960) series which has a superior LED lighting engine, but is considerably thicker than the 8 (850/860).

5Best 46 in LCD
By Stephen Heise
I just got this TV set up and going last weekend and after tweaking all of the settings, this is truly the best TV I've ever owned. I previously had a 30 in tube HDTV. The 850 equals all the best qualities of the CRT and has dozens of tweaks to zero in on the best picture for each type of input.I'm getting my HD signal over the air with a UHF antenna. I have my basic cable running through the S Video input since I don't have any HDMI outputs from my cable box. HD is awesome and standard definition is excellent. What sets this set apart from many others is the USB input. I've put my pictures on a thumb drive, plugged it in and wow. My pictures have never looked better and I'll never look at a 4x6 print again.I have yet to hook up my PC to the TV through the wiselink, but that's next where I'll be able to browse and play all of my movie files. Of course you can put your movies on a thumb drive just get an 8 gig for the movie files. This TV does it all and with style. The screen is very good at holding down room reflections and I am not bothered by the reflective trim. This is a great LCD and only a plasma or LED model at twice the price would beat it.

4Low price leader
By Recursive
At least for now this TV seems like the low price leader among new 2009 52" sets. I am very happy with my purchase after 2 weeks of ownership. I am watching it without any custom tweaking at all and blu-ray looks great, and ATSC digital broadcast reception via a RCA ANT1500 Large Multi-Directional Digital Flat Passive Antenna (White) is excellent too.I bought this sight unseen because the price was right and it seemed to have the important stuff and not the frills, which was just what I wanted. Also previous models of the Aquos line got decent reviews. This is my first large LCD so I don't have much to compare with. The features seem to be just a somewhat more mature version of last years features which is great if you don't want the dubious advantages (and expense) of things like 240hz mode, LED backlighting or ultra-thin screen. The built-in sound is decent with hidden, downward pointing speakers and I use it for live TV (ie News and Sports) but for movies I have it connected to an AV surround amp.Looks great mounted on the wall (nicer than on the stand).Pros: - 10-bit screen - non-glare screen I have it next to large window and although you can certainly see the light reflected, it is a kind of matte look not a sharp reflection. And the brightness of the screen can overcome whatever reflection there is except in dark scenes. - 120hz mode I really don't see a lot of difference so I tend to leave things in the regular movie mode, even for baseball - good response time subjective, nothing to compare - good black subjective, nothing to compare - plenty of connections - can custom label the on-screen menu inputs well, it's important to me :)Cons: - no PIP I don't care - no DLNA/Internet connectivity I'm connected to a MediaPC so this would be redundant except for firmware upgrades which have to be done via a USB port (not sure if end user can do that) - the USB port is good only for service, not, for example, loading home pictures - again with a MediaPC it's not needed. The delivery via Amazon/CEVA was by a couple of very nice guys who brought it in, unpacked it, put it on the stand (which I later removed) and turned it on, which was exactly what I wanted and expected. No dead pixels. 15 month warranty (12 month plus 3 more for registering online) which I hope I don't have to use.

5Excellent TV for the price!
By Scott M. Tingley
Just received this TV yesterday and had it up and running in no time at all. I have successfully connected my Cox HD-DVR, Roku (Netflix device), and Pioneer DVD player (1080p upconvert) to the TV...all with new HDMI cables. Visually this TV looks great, I like the piano black finish and the slight champagne gradiant at the bottom...will look even better once we get it up on our wall I think (wife likes the look too).Upon first powering it up I was greeted with a few simple setup questions all laid out nicely on a very easy to read menu system. Once done I was up and running on our Cox HD-DVR. I went to a basketball game that was on and being broadcast in 1080i. Wow, simply wow. Amazing picture quality...and I hadn't even tweaked the settings yet. After watching a few more channels I switched over to my son's Cars (Pixar movie) DVD to check out the 1080p upconvert and the 120Hz dejudder capabilities. I had never really been able to detect the difference of this in big stores, but wow in the Cars movie at home it was very evident and actually looked really cool. The animation was sooo much smoother, it took a little getting used to but now I'm just amazed at it. Some might not like it, but I think most will.SD channels actually look suprsingly ok. Was expecting them to look like total crap on this size TV, but they dont.Later in the evening I started to get down to adjusting the video settings to get the blacks a litter better and the color to be just right (for my eyes anyway). Took about 30-40 mins but I think I have everything set the way I like it, and it looks even better than the initial settings. Blacks are VERY good. For $1468 shipped, this is an amazing TV. Sure it doesn't have some of the newest bells and whistles...but for some of us who don't have a need for those or the added cost, its nice (ie, ethernet port, USB port, 240Hz, etc). There are only 2 little downsides I have come across:1) The sound is only so-so, but that was to be expected...most TVs just aren't spectacular. The sound is very clear, and voices are easy to hear/understand...but just no bass at all. So movies seem a little drab in the sound department. We will be adding a sound bar soon.2) The viewing angle could be a little better I think. The image gets a little washed as you move to the sides of the TV. I was able to minimize some of it by tweaking the backlight level and contrast/brightness. But still could be better. The stand on this unit swivels though, so we just angle it towards the couch or chairs we will be in and the problem is solved.

4Calibration Settings + Tips/Tricks
By April King
Since I have owned this TV for a few months now, I thought it would be helpful to share a few tips and tricks I have learned:PROBLEM: INCOMPATIBLE AUDIO SIGNALAll my A/V devices (360, PS3, Wii, Samsung DTB-H260F) were connected to my Onkyo TX-SR607 receiver with HDMI, which was set to output to my Sharp Aquos LC-52E77U. And, although the receiver was set to "Audio TV Out" off (and even with it on), the TV kept popping up this error:"Incompatible audio signal has been received, please check the output signal."It only pops up for a few seconds, and only when I would switch devices or resolution or whatever. Still, pretty annoying. Connecting the devices directly to the TV via HDMI caused the same error - the only time it didn't happen is when there was 2ch 44.1/48Khz PCM involved.Unfortunately, unlike every other TV I have ever owned, the Sharp doesn't have a menu option to disable audio. Muting didn't help, either. The solution? Set the audio volume to 0. No more error!PROBLEM: NO DEVICE DETECTED (DVI -> HDMI)When I first got this TV, I plugged in my Mac Mini, using a DVI -> HDMI cable. After using it for a bit, the TV would stop recognizing that the Mac Mini was connected. It turns out that, whenever the Mac Mini would be rebooted or would go to sleep, the Sharp would refuse to recognize that it was connected anymore. The solution? Physically unplugging and plugging in the TV (not just pressing the power button), and disabling sleep on the Mac. I still have to do this unplugging dance occasionally - like for system updates - but not as often as when sleep was enabled. I guess that's the price you pay for a beautiful 1080p HDMI signal, as opposed to a letterboxed 1600x1200 VGA signal - the max this TV supports.CALIBRATION SETTINGSThis TV has some definite problems with blues in areas of high contrast. Here are the best settings I have found, in order of their appearance in the menus:OPC: OffBacklight: +6 (you can adjust up or down a smidge if need be)Contrast: +36Brightness: -6Color: +1Tint: +1Sharpness: -1CMS Hue/Saturation/Value: 0Color Temp.: Low (leave at Mid for color managed devices like Macs, or OTA TV)R Gain: +11G Gain: 0B Gain: -10Fine Motion Enhanced: Off (leave on for sports if you prefer)Active Contrast: OffGamma Adjustment: 0Film Mode: Off (I used Advanced(Low) for sports)Digital Noise Reduction: OffMonochrome: OffRange of OPC: +16 Max, -16 Min (it is off, anyways)

5When you care enough to treat yourself to the very best ...
    By fourcatz
... buy this model. We got it to replace a three year old, 32-inch Sony that has served us very well in our bedroom, but we wanted a bigger screen. We got the bigger screen in a better looking cabinet, and, a much better picture, much better sound, and a much better tuner.UPDATE (8/24/08) - If I could give this TV more than 5 stars, I would. When I registered my TV with SAMSUNG online (as opposed to mailing in the warranty card), they automatically extended the warranty from 12 to 18 months. Then, 2 days ago, I got a box in the mail from SAMSUNG with their USB wireless network adapter. For free! I attached it and gave myself a crash course in setting up wireless network security. At first I used automatic network setup on the TV menu. It worked well but intermittently with WPA-PSK encryption, but, flawlessly when I used manual wireless setup. The content this gives you is from USA Today. I found out what "That Darn Wheel" on the remote is really for. When you read a multipage news story, you have to use the wheel to turn the pages. There's no other way.I ordered a cheap HDMI cable from an Amazon independent vendor (cost $6, including shipping) and hooked the TV up to a Philips 160 GB HDD/DVD recorder with a built-in digital QAM tuner. Got rid of all the other cables to neaten up the cable tangle situation. The recorder does 1080P upscaling if you use the HDMI interface and the TV automatically senses and adjusts its resolution mode to match. Makes even regular channels look almost as good as the HIDEF ones. I don't use the recorder's tuner all the time for normal TV viewing, but when I need it, its there to add a new dimension for enjoying this TV's many features.I got almost $150 back during the 30 day grace period, and the price has fallen another $159 since, but I got it when when I needed it and don't regret not getting a better price. Every time I turn it on, I am glad I chose this model.Back to my original review -PLUSES -CABINET - The jet black bezel has a subtle tinge of red, and is accented with a clear rim. It's stunning.SOUND- I chose this model for the internal subwoofer. We don't want multiple speakers in our bedroom, and the Samsung's internal speakers work fine. We loaded a Blueman Group DVD and the internal woofer was pretty powerful. I turned up the bass on the built-in equalizer and had to throttle it back to neutral so the room wouldn't shake. The factory settings are fine.PICTURE - The picture is sharp, even on analog channels. Digital channels look even better. The wideband flourescent backlight delivers the promised color performance. The factory settings make both analog and digital pictures look fantastic, but I detuned the picture to dim down the light emitted into the room and set the energy saving feature to high which also degrades the picture. Know what? It still looks great.TUNER - We don't have and don't want to use the cable company's box, but, we can get all the analog content and unscrambled digital, high def channels they offer (NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and PBS). The Sony's tuner used to break up on Fox and ABC high def channels, but the Samsung's tuner locks in tight on everything. The Sony took a few seconds to lock on digital channels and the Samsung does this much faster.MINUSES - Not many.PRELOADED CONTENT - The content the factory loaded on the internal flash drive seems silly. It includes games, artwork, recipes, and entertaiment. The artwork includes high def works by Monet, Van Gogh, and Latrec. I can see that it might be nice to use the TV as a picture frame, but who needs it. The other content is OK to look at once, but after that, never again. You can't add content to the internal memory, but you can use MP3 and JPEG content on an external USB thumb drive.THAT DARN WHEEL - Overall, the remote is also great, but the wheel is twitchy and there isn't a single thing you can do with it that you can't do easier by just using it as a 4-way switch (up, down, left, right). It's more awkward to twist the wheel with your thumb than it is to push down on the wheel's edge, but if you aren't careful the slightest twist will change the function you are trying to adjust. It's not hard to master the feel, but the wheel is a totally unnecessary feature. Wonder how much it adds to the remote's production cost. The remote lights up when you touch it, which is great while you are learning where all the buttons are, but it does run the batteries down faster, so the instructions say. You can easily enable and disable the light function.Amazon's price was right and it dropped $45 between the time I ordered and when it was delivered. Getting a refund for the difference took less than 5 minutes on the phone. The TV was delivered 5 days earlier than promised.Directions on how to adjust the TV on/off melody sound, which is annoying, are on page 61 of the manual. Navigate to menu/setup/external settings/melody. then select "off."

    5Form and Function
    By benjamin bannister
I've had this TV for about a month now, all I can say is I have no regrets about this purchase. Of course after heavy researching it came down to this TV based on what I was particularly looking for - form and function. I realized there are new Samsung TVs coming out, but I didn't want to wait for them to be released and then wait yet again for it to become affordable so this was the best option for me. Having a previous Samsung SlimFit TV did sway me to stick with the brand as that TV was beautiful (but TOO heavy). The pluses and minuses:- BEAUTIFULThe red finish that borders around the TV is sleek and subtle (and matches the red accents in my living room, PLUS!). Please note that the red on the 650 version is only on the top and bottom, which looked a little odd for me. The 650 also has that (what I considered super ugly) oval shaped stand compared to the rectangle here.- USB INPUT and DLNAI can watch movies I save onto a USB drive that I plug into the TV. And with DLNA, I can just attach a LAN cable to access most of my media files on my computer *from* the TV! Brilliant! Worth the extra money, by not having to pause it from my computer in another room. (Note on this, you can't rewind and fast-forward computer files after it gets past a certain file size. That means if you are watching a movie and accidentally press stop instead of pause, it's best to watch the rest on a computer. Samsung needs to work on this for future TVs).- 1GB BUILT-IN "ENTERTAINMENT" CONTENTThis feature is essentially pointless--especially the games. I wish I could format the space and do other things with it, but it doesn't hurt the purchase. I'll just access it when I want to learn how to make a salmon sandwich.- VIDEO QUALITYAfter calibration, HD inputs from a digital antenna and Blu-Ray look stunning. Digital air signals come through flawlessly with the same antenna I've been using for a couple of years. As for the viewing angle, I wouldn't say it's 178 degrees though. As long as you're not sitting on the floor to the side or something, you should be fine. The 50,000:1 Dynamic contrast as you know is not the real contrast ratio. That's like the "digital zoom" feature on a camera, totally a sham. However the contrast is just fine with that feature off. Blacks are deep, whites are light. Beautiful.- LIGHTWEIGHTI have the 40" version which I can lift myself! (It also fits my TV stand perfectly. I would've opted for the 46", but that would require buying bigger everythings, and because of living in New York, you have to make most efficient use of space).- THINNESSIt's thin. Which is good and bad. Thin looks great, but now I can't put my center speaker of my surround sound system on top of the TV because it's just too thin and not a flat surface to sit on top. I've had to put it in front of the TV, which is fine. Again, this is not a flaw of the TV itself, I just have to adapt.- 120hz AUTO MOTION RUBBISH2 words, total rubbish, or utterly pointless. Sure the example they give you says it can "intelligently calculate a middle image" between 2 images (using a ball from point A to point B as a simple example), but I don't know how *any* TV could *ever* predict motion between 2 complicated set of frames. It looks stupid, it looks unnatural for movies, and I have no idea why this is even on here or a selling point for this TV. If anything, this made me *not* want to get the TV, but thankfully, you can turn this "feature" off. Hurray! Likewise DNIe and the "video enhancement modes" are rubbish for regular people that don't know how to adjust picture quality. Sorry regular people. I turned all these to "off".- BACKLIGHTThe other "complaint" is the function of backlight. I like that in the menu you can adjust backlight levels manually, but then, they give you an energy saving option that sort of counter-acts that. It makes you wonder if lowering the backlight and turning off power-saving is the same as turning up the backlight and setting power-saving to maximum. Who knows.- SOUNDIt's fine. The built in woofer is a plus. The speakers are loud, I never have it above 20 (out of 100). Not so sure on the TruSurround XT, still seems gimmicky to me, but it doesn't hurt it. Depending on the content, it does sound better with it on. I usually don't care about TV speakers since I have a surround sound system I use instead.- THE REMOTEIt looks cool. I'm a bit iffy on the scroll wheel. it doesn't really work well if you swirl it around, it's best you just press in the direction you want. The back-lit buttons are a major plus!I believe I have addressed most issues and most of the things I had concerns with before I bought it. All in all, I'm not complaining, I like the TV a lot! I don't want to say I love it because it's a material object. I'm glad that Samsung gives you the option of turning most of their features off, and being able to customize a lot. The thing that would make it super perfect would be to add an LED backlight, but that would cost an extra $1000+ or so. Oh, and if you live in New York, buy it somewhere else online where they don't charge you that extra 8% for tax. :-)Hope this helps.

4Excellent TV - works ok for Linux/home networking, HDHomeRun
    By W. Gadsby
This is my first high definition set. I chose this TV for the DLNA compatiblity. If you're not looking for networking, the 650 is probably a better choice. The extra subwoofer is of no value to me, anyway. I have the set connected to a high quality A/V receiver with speakers, and the sound quality is much better than with the TV alone with its built-in subwoofer. There is no comparison. If you're not using it through a conventional audio system, it might help some, but don't count on getting high quality audio without larger speakers. The extra $200 or so for this set over the 650 is primarily justified by its networking capability.Picture quality is incredible. The upconversion engine seems to do an excellent job at converting low definition video. I've watched standard DVDs via component video and SD TiVo programming via the S-Video input, and both look great. I've seen older HDTV sets that have washed out video when showing SD material, and this one definitely does not have that problem. The tuner sensitivity is very good. The analog tuner pulls in stations better than anything else I've seen. The digital sensitivity ends up being not quite as good as my HTL-HD HDTV converter box, however, which has about the best sensitivity I've seen for a digital tuner. One or two digital stations the HTL-HD receives cannot be received by the TV in a similar setup.I already have an extensive home media system and wanted to be able to stream media from Linux PCs to the television set. There are many pitfalls in getting this set up, but with a properly operating DLNA server and a compatible video source, it is possible to stream high definition (1920x1080) video. My present setup includes a HDHomeRun networked HDTV tuner, which sends data to a Pentium III 800 MHz PC with Linux, which saves the data to disk, and then serves it using the Fuppes DLNA server program. There are no dropouts, and everything seems to work fine. One big drawback, however - you can't fast forward or rewind networked material. The TV has no problem with JPEG and MP3 files once set up properly. I had an issue with Fuppes on JPEG files, but the problem was with the program, not the TV. MP3 files must be sampled at 44.1 kHz or perhaps 48 kHz to work properly. I had some files from cassettes that were recorded at a 32 kHz sample rate, and the TV would not play them directly. Fortunately, Fuppes can transcode the files on the fly.All in all, an excellent value if you need a TV with networking capability. Be prepared to spend a lot of time tinkering with software and settings to get the networking operating correctly.
